Council Kick Start New Small Businesses
After investing in an Eastbourne business 12 years ago and creating new units for small start-up businesses, The Stables in South Street has become a thriving base for design companies in Eastbourne.
In 1998 Eastbourne Borough Council and East Sussex County Council worked to provide funding for a business called Glide Design who wanted to turn a previously derelict South Street building into a base that would attract businesses looking to grow in the town.
By offering competitive rents below the standard rates, The Stables has become a firm base for both Glide Design as well as attracting a number of other companies to occupy the small units, with the initial loan being paid off last month.
Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor David Tutt said “The Stables is a fantastic example of what a brilliant location and environment Eastbourne makes for businesses looking to set up here. Glide Design had a great vision in trying to attract inward investment from small companies looking for a new base and I’m really pleased that the Borough Council were able to help this successful project with our initial investment and that The Stables continues to attract new businesses. I really would encourage any new business considering starting up in Eastbourne to contact our Economic Development team who will be able to provide some useful advice.”
Today The Stables is occupied by Glide Design as well as four other companies who are using units within the small complex, including Artica Design Services, Ian Meikle - Design Concepts, As well as The Creative Plot - Web Design Consultants, Chris Weston - Film and book illustration and Avant Photography. Space Insight also reside, who provide consultant services regarding the outer space environment.
Paul Clark, the driving force behind The Stables and owner of Glide Design, says “When I first saw the building I knew it had potential. It was in an appalling state but with the help of the council we where able to convert 'The Stables' into an attractive mews of offices and studios. It had always been my vision to create an area for like minded business, sort of a creative hub of design services all working together.”
Companies interested in finding out more about opportunities available in Eastbourne or looking for advice on starting up their own business in the town should contact the Economic Development team on 01323 415504.
