Merton Council prepares residents for a warm winter

In preparation for the coming winter, Merton Council is calling on residents to take advantage of its London Warm Zone scheme, and insulate their lofts and cavity walls.

Residents have up until the end of December to apply for free and discounted energy saving measures that could save them pots of cash not only on the insulation itself, but on heating bills in the future. To arrange for a free home assessment residents should call the local London Warm Zone approved installer, Dawsetway Heating and Renewables, on freephone 0800 328 8279.

Delicious Christmas lunches using local and seasonal food are being served in National Trust places throughout December. From warming winter casseroles or flavoursome fish dishes, to the traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, visit a National Trust place for a fabulous feast this festive period, and take the pressure off cooking at home.

This year’s Celebrating Age Festival 2010 launched today (Friday 27 August) at SavaCentre in Colliers Wood.

Performers from a number of community groups for older people in the borough showcased dances from different cultures as the festival got off to a leaping start.

HOLDING BACK THE SANDS OF TIME

If you haven't had the chance to visit the fantastic Sand Sculpture Festival in Weston-super-Mare yet then don't panic!
The festival has been so successful that it will stay open for an extra two weeks! Originally planned to shut on September 5 it will now remain open until Sunday September 19.
So you can still marvel at the sandtastic sculptures and the intricate tableaux carved from Weston's sand!

If only trees could talk… National Trust uses latest technology to bring orchards to life

Have you ever wondered what trees would say if they could talk? If so, then the National Trust’s new talking trees trail at Cotehele in Cornwall is set to bring the story of the humble apple tree and orchards to life.

In a pilot project using the latest technology, the trees will literally talk – via an audio recording - when visitors swipe a small pen-like device over any apple logo they find as they wonder through the orchard.
