Staycation Continues for Eastbourne

The UK’s sunniest place is continuing to reap the awards from the staycation in 2010 with a record number of visitors to the Tourist Information Centre in July and more hits than ever on its official tourism website.

More than 36,300 visitors passed through the doors of Eastbourne Tourist Information Centre in July, a quarter up on the number of visitors for the same month in 2009.

Hits on Eastbourne’s official destination website VisitEastbourne.com continue to break records too receiving over 980,000 hits in July with the number of bednights being booked online rising by 30%.

Bumper Bank Holiday in Eastbourne

It’s still full on summer on the south coast as the UK’s sunniest resort gets ready for a busy Bank Holiday weekend offering visitors plenty of reasons to fit in a break to Eastbourne.

This weekend attractions around the town are hosting a packed programme of events for the August Bank Holiday including a Ravilious Film Weekend at Eastbourne’s award-winning gallery Towner, Summer Nights tribute concert at the Bandstand, RNLI Regatta at Sovereign Harbour Marina, and the Italia in Piazza Market along the seafront promenade on Sunday and Monday.

Eastbourne’s award-winning gallery is inviting visitors to view the landscape that inspired works in its current exhibition with a Ravilious Film Weekend over the August Bank Holiday.

Next weekend, from 28-29 August, Towner is holding a special film weekend showing Atonement (cert 15) on Saturday and A Matter of Life and Death (cert U) on Sunday, showcasing the landscape favoured by artist Eric Ravilious, who was brought up in Eastbourne and returned to Sussex often as an adult to revisit the landscape he so loved.

This Friday visitors to Eastbourne Bandstand can look forward to a good old-fashioned style sing-along as Phil & Grant’s Rock n Roll Party brings the iconic landmark to life for a concert inspired by English pop rock duo Chas & Dave and visitors are being offered a last minute chance to grab 2 for 1 tickets.

The audience will be on their feet dancing and singing along this Friday to hits such as Gertcha, Ain’t No Pleasing You and Rabbit, and visitors can get two tickets for the price of one when they book in advance before Friday.

Opening of Regency Community Centre

A brand new community centre will be officially opened by the Mayor of Eastbourne at 10am on Saturday 21 August 2010. The centre in Wartling Road already has a number of users ready to move in.

Mayor of Eastbourne Councillor Carolyn Heaps says, “It’s lovely to see a new community centre opening in the heart of a new development – a much needed resource for everyone to use and help promote a real feeling of community.”
The new centre has a simple lay out with a hall, kitchen and toilets and onsite car park and was built as a condition of the planning permission for the estate.

Airbourne visitors are being offered the opportunity to enjoy the airshow’s spectacular firework finale with exclusive seating at the Bandstand on Sunday evening.

The renowned grand firework finale sponsored by Eastbourne Pier is a huge draw for visitors to the four day free event providing the ultimate finish to the action-packed airshow on Eastbourne seafront.

New for 2010, visitors are being given the chance to book a seat on the upper balcony of Eastbourne Bandstand to watch the dazzling display.

Eastbourne Mayor Leads Airbourne Clean Up

The Mayor of Eastbourne will be leading the clean up after the world’s biggest free seafront airshow on Monday morning joining SITA for a 6.30am start.

Attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, Airbourne is the biggest event in the Eastbourne calendar with over 130 staff employed during the event and a dedicated team of SITA staff who restore Eastbourne’s glorious seafront after the event.

This year, the Worshipful Mayor of Eastbourne Councillor Carolyn Heaps will be on the beaches first thing Monday morning to start the beach litter pick.

Limited Edition Postcards Celebrate Bandstand Birthday

A pair of limited edition postcards has been produced to celebrate Eastbourne Bandstand’s 75th Birthday in 2010 with an unusual photograph and colourful illustration capturing the iconic landmark and turned into a lasting souvenir.

A unique photograph showing the Bandstand’s reflection in a pair of sunglasses and a stained glass effect illustration were voted top in a competition launched to celebrate 75 years of the entertainment venue.

Spectacular South Downs Steal Photo Competition

A spectacular image capturing an iconic Red Arrow Hawk flying over the South Downs has triumphed in the 2010 Eastbourne Airbourne Photo Competition beating off more than 200 entries.

The winning photograph taken by Andrew Campbell was a favourite amongst the judges showcasing one of the most popular flying displays against a backdrop of Eastbourne’s thriving beaches and breathtaking South Downs countryside.
